Every Women’s Centre is now accepting donations for its annual Adopt-a-Family program.

The program helps Santa and his elves ensure that all local families have the food and gifts they need during the holiday season.

The campaign kick-off is an annual “reminder for us all to once again join together to offer folks in our community a little help to enjoy the holidays free of stress and to see their children’s smiles on Christmas morning,” says the organization’s 2023 letter to supporters. “In many cases keeping their family warm, fed and happy does not come without anxiety.”

The organization says that the current housing crisis combined with increasing food costs and a lack of employment opportunities is putting tremendous pressure on some families.

“Thankfully, things seem at least stable in terms of [the] pandemic and hurricane worries of the past few years; but the economic conditions we are all facing certainly is cause for concern. We saw families cut back on the usual Thanksgiving celebrations due to cost, it would only make sense that the same caution will be in place for Christmas,” says the letter.

Wanda Earhart, a longtime employee at the Centre, spoke to The Third about this year’s Adopt-a-Family campaign.

She says that their Back-to-School program grew by more than 150 families this year and expects the same type of growth for the Adopt-a-Family program. Registration for the holiday program took the centre’s staff who were working four phones seven full days to complete.

Earhart says that the Adopt-a-Family program is a great gift idea for that hard-to-shop-for person on your Christmas list and those who have everything they need and want. “What a great gift to give someone.”

If you are interested in adopting a family this holiday season, contact Every Women’s Centre and they will match you with an appropriate family profile. You can choose to do the shopping for the family or have the Centre’s staff do it on your behalf. Donations to the program are also accepted.
