January 27-March 30 2024

Winter is the perfect time of year to cozy up with some good books and the Cape Breton Regional Library wants to give you prizes for all your book worming.

Readers of all ages from CBRM and Victoria County are invited to participate in this year’s Winter Reading Challenge, organized by the Cape Breton Regional Library. It’s a perfect time to cozy up with some good books and earn a chance to win terrific prizes!

Registration for the program opens on January 27th, the 25th annual Canadian Family Literacy Day. Community members can register online, at, or at their local branch.

All reading counts. Whether you enjoy novels, non-fiction, graphic novels, or picture books, this program is for you. Participants can borrow and read library books or books from their own collection.

Participants in the Winter Reading Challenge can choose whether to record their reading digitally, on the READsquared website or app, or on a paper log. The deadline to submit your list is March 30.

Children aged 0-13 earn one prize ballot for every six books read and reported by the deadline; teens and adults (13+) earn one ballot for every three books read. Both age groups can earn additional chances to win by reading more books or completing fun winter activities. Grand prizes will be randomly drawn during the first week of April.

All that is required to participate is a valid CBRL membership card, which can be acquired at no cost from any public library branch.

This year’s top prize winner will receive a Fujifilm Instax Mini 40 Instant Camera (+ 100 exposures). The runner up gets a 2024 NS Museum Family Pass and a Tim Horton’s gift card. The third placed winner will take home gift cards to On Paper Books & Indigo.

During last year’s Winter Reading Challenge, 172 participants logged a total of 2003 books. Library staff are hoping to see this fun and interactive program grow to include more readers.
