Parks Canada: Archaeology Talk

North Sydney Library, North Sydney

6:30-7:30pm

Parks Canada will offer an engaging and informative presentation about the archaeol-ogy at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site and how archaeologists date pottery using seriation. Registration is required. Please call the North Sydney library at 902-794-3272 to reserve your spot.

CBRM Rural Activity Camp: Build It!

Marion Bridge Community Hall, Marion Bridge

9am-12pm, free

Elementary-aged youth are invited to participate in our activity camps. Children must have been in an elementary grade (PP-5) in the last school year in order to attend. CBRM Rural Recreation Activity Camps are FREE but require pre-registration prior to the event. We ask that you send your child with a water bottle and snack (NO NUT PRODUCTS PLEASE!). Activities take place indoors and outdoors and can sometimes get messy (i.e. painting, outdoor play, water games, etc.) so please dress accordingly! Also, we ask that you send your child wearing sunscreen and appropriate footwear! Activity Camp Capacity is based on staff and space available at varying locations. For any questions/concerns call 902-733-2351.


Morning Strides

Morning Strides is a Strider Bike program designed for kids aged 1-5 years old to get active from a young age! Strider bikes can help teach balance and gain confidence to use a bike with pedals! Register now and start the day off with some fun morning strides! Reminder: Participants may bring their own bikes, but if you do not have one, we have strider bikes on hand. We have a small quantity of helmets so participants are encouraged to bring their own, parents/guardians must be in attendance.


ADAPT

Neville Park Soccer Field, Whitney Pier

CBRM Recreation’s much loved ADAPT program is back for another year! Join us Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays throughout the summer for fun, interactive activities with peers and our ADAPT leaders. This program is intended for children/youth aged 5-15 with varying abilities. Our trained and experienced ADAPT leaders accommodate all need to provide participants with an inclusive and welcoming environment. Free play, games, crafts, and one-on-one supports are available throughout the program. Please contact our ADAPT team to complete the registration form at cbrmadapt@gmail.com.

Join CBRM Recreation Gardening Team and guest speakers to discuss the future of community gardens and the local food system of the CBRM.


ConnectArts: Outdoor Painting Competition

Join us for an end of summer outdoor painting competition! Bring your creativity and create something unique. The winner will receive a gift card as their prize. The deposit holds your place. After participation in the workshop, you will be refunded. We strive to ensure all participants are able to access our programs.


Youth Paddle

Mira River Provincial Park, Albert Bridge

4pm-5pm, Free

Suitable for youth between the ages of 12 and 18 years old. Sessions will include instruction by a certified Paddle Canada instructor. Boards and lifejackets will be provided by the CBRM Recreation. Limited spaces available. Pre-registration required.


QueerBoss - Standup Paddleboarding

Mira Gut Beach Municipal Park, Mira Gut

5:30pm-7pm, free

The QueerBoss program aims to be a welcoming and supportive safe space where individuals can learn leadership skills, sharpen athletic skills, stay active, and have fun! The program is open to all youth who are part of the LGBTQIA2S+ community, aged 9-15. QueerBoss strives to introduce non-conventual sports and activities to youth who may not have previously felt comfortable or have not been interested in participating in organized sports. No previous sport/athletic experience is necessary to participate. Limited spots available.


Paint Night at the Storehouse Tavern

Fortress of Louisbourg, Louisbourg

6pm, $55 (19+)

Join us at the Storehouse Tavern for a fun and relaxing “Paint Night” with award winning local artist, Nancy Chiasson. With the scenic Fortress of Louisbourg as the inspiring setting, you will be guided by this experienced teacher to create a wonderful, easy painting in two hours! The cost of $55 per person includes use of paint and brushes, plus instruction that makes it easy and fun to make memories with friends. Painting will be on a slate tile, instead of a traditional canvas. Bar opens at 5:30pm. There will be a full drink menu featuring all Nova Scotia products (cider, wine, craft beer and spirits) and a small food menu available for food and drink purchases. Painting session begins at 6pm.


Ladies Night Stand Up Paddle

Strider Cup

Renwick Brook Trail, Glace Bay

10am-1pm, free

Come get your Stride on August 18th at Renwick Brook Trail! There are three separate strides at 10am, 11am, and 12pm. A Strider Bike is designed for kids aged 1-5 years old to get active from a young age! Strider bikes can help teach balance and gain confidence to use a bike with pedals! Come have your little one try their hand at our Strider Cup Obstacle course. Each Strider needs a helmet. CBRM Recreation does have a few to lend if needed. Parents, care givers and/or guardians must be in attendance!

Fibre Lunch

McConnell Memorial Library, Sydney

Drop into the McConnell Library on Fridays to knit or crochet with a community of crafters. Bring your own project or use donated yarn to make warm items for local non-profit organizations. Enjoy tea and friendly conversation.


ConnectArts: Candle-Making Workshop

New Waterford Library, New Waterford

This workshop will give you a beginner friendly how-to on candle-making. The workshop will be facilitated by Jen MacLellan. Jen is the owner and creator of Dollie Brand Candles. She has been testing and making candles for over two years. Making candles is something she has always wanted to do and once she delved into it, Jen realized she needed to know a lot about the science and chemistry behind making them, otherwise she wouldn’t produce the best product. Jen has mastered that perfection. This workshop is the perfect opportunity to try something new and possibly pick up a new hobby! Please register at CBRMrecreation.ca. The deposit holds your place. Parka’s great sleepover

Looking for a family-fun activity to end the season with a bang? Parka’s Great Sleepover might be just the thing for you! On August 19, you are invited to spend the night at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site for an evening of family-friendly games presented by Parks Canada and the Fortress Louisbourg Association. Roast marshmallows over a campfire and star gaze at the site of the first observatory in Canada! The evening begins at 5:30 pm, when you will be checked-in to your campsite (complete with tents, lanterns and floor mats!). Enjoy an unforgettable family camping trip in a truly unique location! The program will aim to provide activities that are physically active based but not typical sports that can be participated in through other programs. This is our final week of the summer! We're going to end it strong with playing Capture the Flag! If you love playing this game in gym class, you have got to come out and play it with us!

Back-to-School Clothing Swap

McConnell Library, Sydney

5-7pm

Why shop when you can swap? Clear out your kids’ closets and refresh their back-to-school wardrobe by swapping their items for new-to-them treasures. Clothing swaps are great ways to declutter and do something good for the community. Bring your items to the library by 5pm on Saturday, August 19 to get a voucher you can use to “shop” from 5-7pm on Tuesday, August 22. All children’s sizes (infant to size 16/XL) of clean clothes in good condition welcome! No clothes to donate? No problem! Everyone is welcome to “shop” the swap from 10am-3pm on Wednesday, August 23. ACCEPTING jeans, pants, sweaters, sweatshirts, t-shirts, dresses, skirts, shorts, athletic wear, onesies, sleepers, and coats. NOT ACCEPTING pajamas, accessories, undergarments, items with rips or stains. Leftover items will be donated to local organizations.

The GirlBoss program aims to be a welcoming and supportive environment where individuals can learn leadership skills, sharpen their athletic abilities, stay active, and have fun! This program is open to all youth who identify as girls or non-binary aged 9-15. This program introduces non-conventional sports and activities to youth who may not have previously felt comfortable or have not been interested in participating in organized sports. No previous sport/athletic experience is necessary to participate in the program. This program aims to be barrier free. If lack of transportation, access to proper footwear/clothing, or other barriers limit your participation please inquire for support any time.


NamasTuesday's Yoga – Indian Beach

Yoga in the park is all about having fun and trying something new! Join yogi Amanda Rowe for a one-hour class that will get your body moving and allow you to try new poses that you may not try on your own. Meet us on the grass for this super fun and relaxing yoga session!
