LARGE WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT PROJECT PITCHED TO COUNCIL

At the last council meeting before Christmas, Doucet Developments manager Douglas MacLennan presented the company’s vision for the section of the Sydney waterfront that until recently was owned by the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. They call it Edgewater.

The company is planning both an eight-storey building and a nine-storey building that will include 166 residential units, 21 commercial units, and parking garage for more than 400 vehicles. MacLennan noted that some of the spaces will be available to the public.

The company wants to start construction this spring but admits that it will likely be the fall before the ground is broken.

MacLennan told the council that the first phase of construction will take three years to complete.  But the next steps for the company will include completing constructability assessments and looking for public feedback through future engagement exercises.

Council approved a memorandum of understanding with Doucet Developments in January 2023 to sell the land and called on Doucet Developments to begin construction within 18 months.

Doug Doucet, the President and Founder of Doucet Developments, is originally from the Third, he was born and raised in Westmount.
