Parks Canada: Archaeology Talk

Parks Canada will offer an engaging and informative presentation about the archaeology at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site and how archaeologists date pottery using seriation. Registration is required. Please call the library at 902-849-8657 to reserve your spot.

Let’s get Pride week started! Come out and join Kat Marinelli, with Down Home Creations, for a fun evening of wood projects, drinks, music and laughter. All supplies will be included in price. The project will be pre-cut and easy for any skill level. Afterwards, hang out and dance the rest of the night away. 19+ event as the bar will be open.


Morning Strides

Morning Strides is a Strider Bike program designed for kids aged 1-5 years old to get active from a young age! Strider bikes can help teach balance and gain confidence to use a bike with pedals! Register now and start the day off with some fun morning strides! Reminder: Participants may bring their own bikes, but if you do not have one, we have strider bikes on hand. We have a small quantity of helmets so participants are encouraged to bring their own, parents/guardians must be in attendance.


ADAPT

CBRM Recreation’s much loved ADAPT program is back for another year! Join us Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays throughout the summer for fun, interactive activities with peers and our ADAPT leaders. This program is intended for children/youth aged 5-15 with varying abilities. Our trained and experienced ADAPT leaders accommodate all need to provide participants with an inclusive and welcoming environment. Free play, games, crafts, and one-on-one supports are available throughout the program. Please contact our ADAPT team to complete the registration form at cbrmadapt@gmail.com.


QueerBoss - Archery

258 Keltic Drive, Sydney

The QueerBoss program aims to be a welcoming and supportive safe space where individuals can learn leadership skills, sharpen athletic skills, stay active, and have fun! The program is open to all youth who are part of the LGBTQIA2S+ community, aged 9-15. QueerBoss strives to introduce non-conventual sports and activities to youth who may not have previously felt comfortable or have not been interested in participating in organized sports. No previous sport/athletic experience is necessary to participate.

This week we have our friend John from John's Archery coming to teach us about archery! There will be different bows you can try out as well as different targets to shoot at!


Pride Youth Dance

We are kicking pride week off a day early with a Pride Youth Dance. This is a 18 and under event with free admission. This is a dry and substance free event!

Drag Story Time

Story time is full of wonder, imagination, and on August 4 a little bit of DRAG! Drag Story Time is BACK this year with your favourite local queens and kings who are SO excited to see some smiling faces. Come for the stories, share some laughs and even get a photo with your favourite drag performer. Drag Story Time is family-friendly, and open to all ages – with OR without children, of course.

Flag Raising Ceremony - Pride Cape Breton

The tradition continues! Kick off the 2023 Pride Cape Breton Festival with us by raising the 2SLGBTQIA+ Pride flag high at the CBRM Civic Centre. Mayor Amanda McDougall, Pride Cape Breton Board members, city officials, and maybe even a few special guests will be on deck with some inspiring speeches and welcoming declarations! Refreshments & snacks will be provided FREE c/o the CBRM.


The Drag Show

Fit 4 Tots

Colliery Lands Park, New Waterford

The Fit 4 Tots program will aim to provide beginning sport/movement instruction to children aged 0-5. The basis of this program will focus on getting the children active while providing them with proper developmental skills by introducing aspects of the 5 fundamental movements (I.e., kicking, throwing, jumping, etc.). Parents/guardians/caregivers will be required to stay with their children for this program.

The biggest parade on Cape Breton Island is BACK! We think this deserves some celebration, don't you agree? Come OUT and show your PRIDE. Everybody should be proud to be themselves; no matter sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, race, age, ability, or beliefs spread love and show the world that you are #PROUDTOBE YOU! The Parade route starts again this year on Dorchester Street in Sydney, then along the Esplanade, onto Townsend Street, along George Street, and will finish down Ferry Street leading into the Pride Party in the Park at Open Hearth Park.

Ball Hockey Tournament

Join us on Saturday August 5th for a Ball Hockey Tournament! We will be hosting our first Ball Hockey Tournament since 2020 at 10:00am at the Emera Centre! Tournament will be open to all above the age of 17. We will be having a maximum of 6 teams, with a max of 7 people on each team. You are required to bring your own equipment, besides nets and balls. The Get Active program will encourage youth to get out and participate in fun summer activities! The program will aim to provide activities that are physically active based but not typical sports that can be participated in through other programs. This week participants will play lots of different relay games or Spikeball, this is a great opportunity to come out and try Spikeball!

The GirlBoss program aims to be a welcoming and supportive environment where individuals can learn leadership skills, sharpen their athletic abilities, stay active, and have fun! This program is open to all youth who identify as girls or non-binary aged 9-15. This program introduces non-conventional sports and activities to youth who may not have previously felt comfortable or have not been interested in participating in organized sports. No previous sport/athletic experience is necessary to participate in the program. This program aims to be barrier free. If lack of transportation, access to proper footwear/clothing, or other barriers limit your participation please inquire for support any time.


NamasTuesday's - Yoga on Petersfield Provincial Park

CBRM Rural Activity Camp: Shark Week

Coastal Discovery Centre, Main a Dieu

Elementary-aged youth are invited to participate in our activity camps from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Children must have been in an elementary grade (PP-5) in the last school year in order to attend. CBRM Rural Recreation Activity Camps are FREE but require pre-registration prior to the event. We ask that you send your child with a water bottle and snack (NO NUT PRODUCTS PLEASE!). Activities take place indoors and outdoors and can sometimes get messy (i.e. painting, outdoor play, water games, etc.) so please dress accordingly! Also, we ask that you send your child wearing sunscreen and appropriate footwear! Activity Camp Capacity is based on staff and space available at varying locations. Pride Cape Breton Living Library

Trauma. Tragedy. Triumph. Real people. Real stories. Unsung heroes. The Living Library is an essential part of Pride Cape Breton’s Pride Celebration, especially in these times. We’re lucky enough to have members of our community, all with very different stories, share their lived experiences with us so we can learn, grow, revaluate our biases, and consider another person’s journey. Each of the evening’s speakers have volunteered to share the hardships that have shaped their lives and how they decided to take control instead of being destroyed by them. Please join us in this beautiful experience at the McConnell Library in Sydney on August 9th at 5:00PM – it’s not often we get an opportunity like this. Hope to see you there!
