Selected alongside three other exceptional Nova Scotian communities, New Waterford has etched its name in the list of honorees that also includes Greenville in Yarmouth County, Pugwash in Cumberland County, and Sambro in Halifax Regional Municipality.

The Lieutenant Governor's Community Spirit Award stands as a testament to communities that champion citizen engagement, civic pride, and an optimistic vision for the future. This award marks a distinguished achievement for New Waterford, with the selection committee recognizing its outstanding efforts and its profound commitment to uplifting its residents and safeguarding its unique history.

“I am delighted to recognize communities that have gone above and beyond to foster long-term engagement, provide support to residents, and preserve their unique history," expressed Lt.-Gov. Arthur J. LeBlanc. "Their commitment to positive change and collective growth is inspirational, and I look forward to presenting the awards over the coming weeks."

New Waterford's application for the award offered an insightful glimpse into the community's rich history, along with its remarkable efforts in nurturing a strong sense of belonging and collective purpose. The town's commitment to preserving its unique heritage and fostering community spirit was highlighted as a driving force behind its selection for this esteemed accolade.

Pat Dunn, Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage, applauded this year's award recipients for their resilience and diversity, affirming, "These four communities are being celebrated for their efforts to preserve their rich history, show their community spirit, and their dedication to making life better for their citizens."

The recognition ceremony, a significant highlight of the award program, will be held later this year in New Waterford, offering an opportunity to celebrate the town's achievements and honour its enduring community spirit.

The Lieutenant Governor's Community Spirit Award, which was established in 2007 by then lieutenant-governor Mayann Francis, has since recognized 50 exceptional communities that exemplify the ideals of unity, growth, and commitment.

New Waterford's triumph in securing the 2023 Lieutenant-Governor's Community Spirit Award serves as an inspiration not only to its residents but to all communities striving to build a brighter future through collaboration, engagement, and an unwavering spirit of togetherness.

The Third congratulates all residents of New Waterford and everyone who worked for this achievement.
