SHOPPING SECOND-HAND: A CONSCIOUS AND ECO-FRIENDLYWAY OF GIFT GIVING WHILE SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESS

As the holiday season approaches, many of us start thinking about what gifts to give to our loved ones. While buying new and expensive gifts may seem like the best option, there are actually many benefits to choosing to buy second-hand gifts for Christmas.

Buying second-hand Christmas gifts is a great way to save money. During the holiday season, it's easy to get caught up in the consumerist mindset and overspend on gifts. However, by opting for second-hand gifts, you can find unique and high-quality items at a fraction of the cost.

Plus, second-hand gift buying is a sustainable and eco-friendly choice. By choosing to buy second-hand, we reduce the demand for new products and decrease our carbon footprint. It's a small but impactful way to contribute to the fight against climate change and protect our planet.Buying second-hand gifts also supports local businesses and charities. After all the second-hand stores in the Third are run by individuals who live in our community, so by shopping at their stores, we are directly supporting their livelihoods.

The Third popped into some of our second-hand shops to see what we could find. Our first stop was Prince Used Furniture, Antiques, and Collectibles on Prince Street in Sydney.

If you have someone who likes vintage and antiques on your list this year, this shop should be a must. Whether you have a large or small budget, there is something for everyone.

The shop has a collection of vintage toys, jewelry, prints, folk art, cameras, signage, glass and crystal and so much more. If furniture is on the list, owner Glenn Mitchelitis has you covered. He has two floors full of high-quality, solid wood options to choose from in all sizes and for all occasions.

On Charlotte Street, we stopped in at Gala-re, where owner Rick Jessome showed us some of the designer and vintage handbags he has in stock. The store has a large selection of previously owned handbags, clutches, and sidebody leather bags.

Gala-re also has a large stock of high-end brands of clothing and accessories for all those fashionistas on your list.

Down the street at Ed’s Books and More, we found a collection of vintage porcelain dolls and a good collection of comic books, including the popular series X-Men and the old favourite Fantastic Four.

Another benefit of buying second-hand Christmas gifts is that it allows for more creativity and personalization. When you shop at traditional retail stores, you are limited to the products they offer. However, at the Third’s second-hand stores, you can find unique and one-of-a-kind items that you won't find anywhere else. This gives you the opportunity to give your special people a truly special and personalized gift that they are more likely to enjoy and cherish.

At Atomic Records and Collectibles, located in the Value Check Plaza in Sydney River, shoppers have the chance to buy records that they can’t get in any of the retail stores. Tom MacKenzie, owner of Atomic, reminds us that some of the best music ever made is only available at shops like his. “It’s not that Matt Minglewood is pressing new vinyl. The only way to get some music is buying pre-owned.”

MacKenzie says that some people are reluctant to purchase second hand albums for Christmas gifts, but he says that gift givers should keep in mind that once the plastic is removed there is little difference between new and previously owned vinyl.

At Atomic you can have a look at the album and the sleeve, so you know the condition of the music you are purchasing. The store has a massive collection of records. You can also find CDs too.

Buying second hand gifts also promotes the idea of reusing and repurposing items. In today's society, there is a culture of disposability, where we constantly buy new things and discard the old ones. By choosing to buy second hand gifts, we are promoting the idea of giving items a second life and reducing the amount of waste we produce. This not only benefits the environment, but also teaches us to be more mindful of our consumption habits.Buying second hand Christmas gifts is a sustainable, creative, and socially responsible choice that allows us to give meaningful gifts while also making a positive impact on the world. So, this holiday season, consider opting for the second-hand gifts that are available in the Third and join the movement towards a more conscious and eco-friendly way of gift giving.
