VIEW FROM THE THIRD- DECEMBER 21

The festive season is upon us, and our thoughts have turned to gift-giving and spreading joy to those around us. However, amid all the hustle and bustle, we at The Third think it’s important to remember the spirit of Christmas.

Let us remember to care for the vulnerable members of our community. While the holiday season can bring joy and happiness, it can also be a difficult time for those in the Third who are struggling. As we gather with our families and friends, let us not forget those who may not have anyone to celebrate with. A simple act of kindness can go a long way in spreading the spirit of Christmas. Whether it be our elderly who aren’t mobile enough to get out as they would like, the growing number of Thirders struggling with addiction, or newcomers to the Third, there are many who won’t be celebrating the holidays the way they do in Hallmark movies. A small gesture such as delivering a warm meal or offering to run errands can brighten their holiday season.

There are so many ways to remind our community members that we care and that we are thinking of them during the holidays.

In recent years, the rise of online shopping and big chain stores arriving in the Third has made it easy to overlook our small, local businesses that make our communities what they are. We often forget that these businesses are run by our neighbours, friends, and family members, who put their heart and soul into their work. By choosing to shop locally, we not only support these hardworking individuals, we also contribute to the growth and vitality of our community. We can make a conscious effort during the final shopping days before Christmas to shop local and discover the hidden gems we have. From handmade crafts to delicious treats, there is something for everyone at these small shops. The last four issues of The Third has featured some of them.

As we continue to celebrate this cheerful time of year, we can also continue to make a difference in the Third. By showing compassion towards our vulnerable populations and supporting small businesses, we can make a positive impact in our community that will last much longer than the season.

To all those celebrating, Happy Holidays from all of us at The Third.

Thank you for reading.

Thank you for supporting.

You made our Christmas Wish come true!
